The Clinico-statistical Study of Dysphagia Caused by Geriatiric Disease

Abstract
Purpose: This study has been conducted to find out each disease characteristic and rate of occurrence analyzing dysphagia caused by geriatric disease in the therapy statistics and to suggest the necessity of rehabilitation treatment against swallowing dysfunction for those who suffer from geriatiric disease.

Methods: Conduct the sex/age/disease/symptom-specific statistical survey on 58-geriatric those with dysphagia among the patients from the department of occupational therapy of Parkside Rehabilitation Hospital going over videofluoroscopic swallowing study and medical records.

Results: At first, there are more dysphagia patients in men group than women, the dysphagia frequency rises obviously over 60 years old geriatrics, especially 70s have the largest number. Secondly the highest frequency of dysphagia has appeared in the stroke disease group which also has the highest prevelence. Thirdly, when classified by symptom, the highest frequency of occurrence came out from oral residue after swallow in the oral phase, and from delayed swallowing reflex in the pharynx phase.

Conclusion: Dysphagia, which especially occurred by geriatric disease, affects the quality of life. Therefore being more concerned about the aged swallowing difficulty will be needed and this research will be offering a proposal to vitalize the prevention program of the aged dysphagia.
